Additional support needs
We have a duty to make adequate and efficient provision for the additional support of each child and young person with additional support needs.
Many young people experience short term difficulties in learning that can be quickly remedied by additional help. A small proportion, around 20%, may need specialist support to help maintain steady headway. Between 1% and 2% of children and young people have difficulties that are long term and require particular arrangements or provision.
We are committed to give the best opportunities for all children and young people.
Additional support needs schools
Doors Open at Woodland View School
The Council's brand new £34.9m Additional Support Needs School – Woodland View – opened to pupils on Friday 18 August 2023.
Pupils from Campsie View School in Lenzie and Merkland in Kirkintilloch have come together to be taught together in the state-of-the-art facility in Waterside, Kirkintilloch. The school is custom-built, designed to be both practical and stimulating for these children and young people who have a broad range of additional support needs.
It boasts lots of open spaces and a sensory trail leading from the ground floor to the first floor. There are break out learning spaces, extra wide corridors and lifts. Both indoors and out, the school is a welcoming and comfortable learning environment with modern décor and fittings.
Consultation on proposed new Additional Support Needs (ASN) school, Waterside
Following consultation with parents, pupils and teachers at Merkland and Campsie View schools, the Waterside community and key statutory consultees, detailed plans for a new state-of-the-art ASN school for children in East Dunbartonshire have been drawn up.
However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Council was unable to hold the planned, final consultation events. Instead video presentations on the proposed layout for the school were done in May with Waterside Community Council and the Interim Parent Council.
A short online survey was also carried out to gather views on the detailed plans. All parents and carers, teachers and pupils from Campsie View and Merkland schools, local residents and other stakeholders were encouraged to consult the attached plans before completing the online survey which ran until 5pm on Friday 19th June 2020.
Following these consultations we compiled a list of FAQs about the project.
