Provost Alan Brown

Provost Alan Brown imageIt is with great sadness that the Council confirms that Provost Alan Brown passed away on Saturday 13 November. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this devastating time. Our Joint Leaders and Chief Executive have paid tribute.

An online book of condolence is now open and messages can be submitted.

Provost Alan Brown is the Civic Head of East Dunbartonshire and in addition to his civic duties he chairs the meetings of East Dunbartonshire Council.

As part of his civic role, Provost Brown meets with visitors and dignitaries to the area and represents the Council and the people of East Dunbartonshire at a range of different events.

Depute Provost Gary Pews assists the Provost in hosting Civic Receptions and events and visiting residents of East Dunbartonshire celebrating significant milestones such as 100th Birthdays, Golden or Diamond Wedding celebrations etc.

Provost's Charity

A Provost's Charity is run through the Civic Office, raising money for good causes. A major fundraiser was launched in October 2019, in conjunction with Turkish Airlines - offering one lucky winner a pair of return airline tickets to a destination on the company's network. The draw took place on Friday 22 November 2019 and the lucky winner was Angela Cobburn of Bearsden.

Citizenship Ceremonies

Citizenship Ceremonies are where new citizens are formally granted their citizenship of the United Kingdom. They are organised by the Registrar on behalf of the Home Office and in East Dunbartonshire, Provost Brown and a representative of the Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire play an important role in conducting these ceremonies and welcoming new citizens to the United Kingdom and in particular East Dunbartonshire.

Provost’s Office

The Provost’s Office provides support to the Provost and Depute Provost and co-ordinates the organisation of civic functions, including applications for civic receptions received from community, businesses and other local organisations.
