Information on Covid-19
The National Health Service (NHS) is the main source of information for coronavirus (Covid-19) and the NHS Inform website is regularly updated with the latest information in relation to guidance and advice, social distancing, what to do if your household has symptoms and where to find further information:

Wellbeing Support for the Vulnerable
There is a range of help available in East Dunbartonshire for those that are vulnerable and who need some additional support as a result of the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19). If you need to request support, please contact the free national helpline:
National Helpline: 0800 111 4000 (Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm)
You will be put through to a member of our local team who can advise on the Council and/or relevant agencies that can help you to get food and medicines and any other support and assistance you need if you do not have any family or friends that can help with this.
In addition to food, support with collecting medicines and in relation to social isolation, we can also arrange the delivery of free sanitary products whilst these are not currently available as our schools and community centres are closed Please let our advisers know of your needs by telephone or email.
If you have family or friends who can support you while you, please use this network so that we can target resources to those most in need in our community.

Support from East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA)
East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA) are providing a range of support for those in the local area for those who are shielding and those who are vulnerable but do not fall in to the specific shielding category.
The Council is working closely with EDVA, and EDVA are working in partnership with the providers of the Older People’s Advice Line (OPAL). You can request support by contacting the OPAL Advice Line or by email as follows:

The Advice Line is open 7 days a week from 9am - 5pm.
It is available to all those requiring support during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, including vulnerable people in need of assistance for assistance with shopping, prescription collections and also social isolation through the befriending service.
Support from local Supermarkets
A number of supermarkets locally have specific services for the vulnerable, especially those that are unable to order online. Here are a selection of the services on offer:
There is a telephone ordering service for those unable to order online.
It’s a national phone line with a series of options including ordering a Food Box (option 4) and doorstop delivery (option 5) Tel: 0345 611 6111.
Morrisons Food Box
Customers can order a food box by phone, choosing option 4 on 0345 611 6111
- Vegetarian food box - £35
- Meat eaters’ food box - £35
- Family food box - £45
The meat eater or vegetarian box consists of a weekly shop for 2 people for a week. Further details can be found here: https://www.morrisons.com/food-boxes/
Doorstep Delivery Service
This is specifically for elderly or vulnerable people who are unable to order online. Customers can speak to someone and pick from a list of essential items with an option of adding on 2-3 additional items not on the list. Tel: 0345 611 6111 and select option 5 from the menu.
There are 20 slots allocated for each Morrisons store each day. Customers must live within a 10 mile radius of a store. Payment is taken on delivery by the driver using a chip and pin reader so customer must have a credit/debit card - cash payments are not accepted. Phone lines operate Mon-Sat 8am-5pm and deliveries from Tues-Sun and they usually provide next day delivery.

East Dunbartonshire Food Bank
East Dunbartonshire Food Bank continues to operate at this time and is available to those who are in poverty with no means to buy food.
Access to the Food Bank is by referral from the Council or from another Agency and you should contact either the National Freephone Helpline (who will route you to our local team) or the OPAL Helpline

The Food Bank has centres in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Milngavie, but distribution can be arranged throughout East Dunbartonshire where required.
If you or a neighbour or friend are a victim of domestic abuse, it is important to know that help is available. Please do not delay in seeking help in the current coronavirus (Covid-19) situation. You can call the 24-hour Domestic Abuse Helpline in confidence on 0800 027 1234.

Domestic abuse is a crime and should not be tolerated. You can call 101 to report it and 999 in an emergency.
Council Tax Reduction and Benefits
If you find yourself in financial difficulty as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, you may be eligible to apply for Benefits including Council Tax Reduction. You can find out more information, including how to apply, here:
Scottish Welfare Fund
The Scottish Welfare Fund is there to help you if you are on benefits, have a low income or are having problems in paying a one-off expense. Grants do not need to be paid back to the Council, but are intended to meet one-off needs rather than on-going expenses. There are two types of grant available to those who find themselves in financial difficulty. The crisis grant and the community care grant. Welfare and Financial Advice
Welfare and financial advice is available through the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). The service they provide is free, independent, confidential, impartial and available to everyone. East Dunbartonshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) can be contacted in the following ways:

Feeling Anxious as a result of Covid-19

There are some resources and support that can offer help if you or someone you know is feeling lonely.
- Time for Talking: free and available for a friendly chat anytime, day or night on 0800 970 3980
- Age Scotland: 0800 12 44 222 it's a free and confidential helpline for older people, their carers or families
- Samaritans: 116 123 it's a 24h helpline free and confidential. They can also be contacted by email and post.
Relaxation is a great way to try and overcome feelings of anxiety. You should try and make time every day to do something to relax. Here are two links to the Cope Scotland website for a relaxation in 3 minutes video and six easy tips to manage stress:
It might also be helpful to find something which helps you get distracted from negative or anxious thoughts, for example, playing a game or doing a puzzle. Mindful colouring in can be very good for helping to switch off for a few minutes. Mind and Draw will shortly be starting some online creative ideas classes.
Isolation and Loneliness
Please call the National Freephone Helpline if you are concerned about isolation and loneliness and you do not have a network of family or friends to support you. You will be connected to our local advisers, who will be able to provide you with information and where you can get support:

East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust (EDLC Trust)
The EDLC Trust run the libraries and leisure centres in East Dunbartonshire and they have a wide range of support available through their website whilst these facilities are closed:
Support available includes:
- e-books, available to download at home. We have increased the numbers of copies we have so that they are available to many more in our community at this time
- Virtual meetings for our Reading Groups (whose meetings were obviously an important opportunity for social interaction).
- e-comics, e-magazines and e-newspapers available online, with simple step by step guides etc., plus how to use
- Online guidance on how to use Skype and other tools that people may wish to use to connect whilst the stay-at-home guidance is in place

NEW (12 May 2020): A supply of library books for loan can be delivered to adult residents who are unable to access online resources. This can be arranged by contacting the national helpline telephone contact number 0800 111 4000 to request this service. You will then be contacted by a libraries representative to discuss preferences and arrange deliveries.

Health and Fitness
Whilst the stay-at-home guidance is in place, it is still important that we look after our health and fitness.
As part of the stay-at-home requirements, we are permitted to leave the home for daily exercise, for up to an hour each day, but ensuring we stay close to home and avoid any unnecessary travel.
Even if you are not able to leave your home for daily exercise, there are a wide range of resources available to help you to exercise at home. These options range from the gentle through to more energetic workout. Some examples include:
Chartered Institute of Physiotherapy
A simple set of six exercises from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy have been designed especially for older people to help them stay active at home during isolation.
The exercises have been designed by expert physiotherapists and can easily be done from home.
Strengthening muscles and exercising will improve mood, help sleep patterns and benefit overall health and wellbeing and importantly prevent deconditioning.
EDLC leisure regularly post workouts to do at home on their social media channels while the leisure centres and gyms remain closed. You can follow these here:
Support for Families

Parents and carers looking after children and young people can get them involved in activities and chores such as tidying, gardening or cooking. Parent Club has some easy recipes the whole family can help make, and a range of resources for keeping the family engages and occupied:
Young Scot also have a dedicated COVID-19 website, dedicated to information and support relating to COVID 19 for young people. The site is being continually updated and includes links to trustworthy information.
Whether it's practical or emotional support, there are lots of ways you can volunteer to help. You can only volunteer to carry out tasks which involve leaving your home, once a day, if you are not required to be isolating and are not in any risk categories.

For many, the most helpful thing we can do to support our NHS and our communities during this coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, is to stay at home to save lives.
