A free app is being launched in East Dunbartonshire which aims to get people walking, wheeling, cycling, running and using public transport … while earning rewards on the go.

The Council has teamed up with BetterPoints to encourage ‘local motion’ – helping to promote better health and wellbeing, active travel and efforts to tackle climate change.

The app, which is already used by a number of local authorities across the UK, allows participants to earn points that can be spent at participating local businesses, redeemed for vouchers at major retailers and hospitality venues or donated to charity.

For residents, signing up is easy – download the BetterPoints app for free to a smartphone or tablet from your app store and register with a local postcode to join the BetterPoints East Dunbartonshire challenge. Journeys are then detected through the app – so once a user starts moving, activity is automatically recorded.

Whenever you walk, wheel, run, cycle and ride on public transport in East Dunbartonshire, you can earn BetterPoints. You can get bonus points if you travel sustainably into Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Milngavie town centres.

Everyone who joins BetterPoints East Dunbartonshire and completes the Get Started Survey before Sunday 9 June will be entered into a draw for a £20 Scotland Loves Local East Dunbartonshire Gift Card.

For businesses and service providers, signing up is also easy – and there’s no cost, reward vouchers are paid for by BetterPoints – get in touch via the website

It’s a way to reach new customers, boost business, be featured on the app, and to promote local sustainability and good health.

I’m delighted that the BetterPoints app is now available for residents, businesses and service providers in East Dunbartonshire. It’s an innovative way to encourage people to get active, improving their health and wellbeing, while reducing carbon emissions.
Councillor Pamela Marshall, Vice Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets Committee

“We’re lucky that our area offers so many wonderful walking and cycling routes. Find out more about how you could achieve your goals on the go and turn miles into smiles by downloading the app for free or visiting the website.”

Please note, to use the app and accrue points, you need to be aged 14 or over due to online privacy legislation. The app is only available for smartphones and tablets.
