Annual Leave

All full-time employees benefit from 26 days annual leave and 6 fixed public holidays per year from the first year of employment. This rises to a maximum of 36 days annual leave and 6 fixed public holidays, depending on the length of service. Part-time employees are also entitled to annual leave on a pro-rata basis.

Pension Scheme

New employees will have the opportunity to join the Strathclyde Pension Fund. This is one of the largest local authority pension funds in the UK, and is one of the few remaining ‘final salary’ schemes. Some of the benefits of joining the scheme include;

  • an index-linked pension based on your final salary
  • a lump sum death in service protection of three times your salary
  • a pension payable to your surviving spouse* on your death in service
  • a pension payable to your surviving spouse* on your death in retirement
  • an ill-health pension paid from any age for those with two years service who are permanently unable to work. *’Spouse’ includes, husband/wife, registered civil partner or co-habiting partner

Life Insurance

For those employees who do opt-out of the Pension Scheme, we have a free employee Life Assurance scheme, which provides dependants of our employees with one years’ salary, with a minimum payment of £5,000 in the event of their death.

Occupational Sickness Pay

In addition to any entitlement you may have to Statutory Sick Pay, we also have an occupational scheme. This, depending on your length of service, will mean that you will receive up to 26 weeks full pay, then 26 weeks half-pay within a rolling year. We are also committed to the Health and Well-being of all our employees and have a range of services available to assist our employees to return to work following periods of sick leave.

Employee Development

All employees receive a Performance and Development Review (PDR). Within the PDR all developmental needs are reviewed and explored on both a personal and professional level. This is to make sure that our employees are; equipped to do the job and are motivated, this results in better customer service and service delivery.

Childcare Vouchers – Salary Sacrifice

In addition to the Employee Benefits, EDC also offers its employees salary sacrifice Childcare vouchers. This helps with the cost of childcare costs by allowing employees to take a set amount from their salary before tax and national insurance contributions and using that to pay for registered childcare. EDC also regularly reviews the salary sacrifice schemes that are available and offers them to employees.

Employee Well-being

The wellbeing of all our employees is extremely important to us. One such way we try to support the well-being of our employees is by participating in the Healthy Working Lives award programme, which supports employers and employees to develop health promotion and safety themes in the workplace in a practical, logical way that's beneficial to all.

In-house Support

We provide an in-house confidential welfare support service to all employees within normal working hours.

External Support

We offer an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to our employees, which provide a range of support services to employees 24 hours a day, seven days a week, online, by telephone and text and by email. This fully confidential programme will be available to all Council employees and will be delivered by Workplace Options who are one of the UK’s leading providers of EAPs. The services that will be available on a 24 hour basis include:

  • Clinical Counselling over the phone
  • Work-life Services
  • Secure access to the EAP Website
  • E-mail, text messaging and fax contact facilities

Work Life Balance

As a caring employer, we realise that there can be significant demands placed on our employees to balance life both at work and at home. To help our employees achieve this balance, we offer all employees with 26 week continuous service the right to request flexible working. In addition to this, we also offer generous entitlements for maternity, paternity, adoption and fostering leave, which in most cases, offer much more than the legal minimum.

Credit Union

All East Dunbartonshire Council employees are eligible to join Scotwest Credit Union and save directly from their wages or salary each pay day. Scotwest is a financial co-operative which exists to provide safe, competitive and fair financial services to anyone who lives or works in the West of Scotland, and provides a range of financial services.

Leisure Facilities

All employees can benefit from a discounted corporate membership at our Leisure Centres based at;

  • the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs
  • Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre
  • he Allander in Bearsden

These facilities have recently received a £0.5 million makeover and include swimming pools, gyms, spin studios, sports halls all with the latest classes and tuition.

Staff Magazine

Every quarter, the staff magazine ‘EDIT’ is issued to all employees.  It is bursting with information about the Council, offers, competitions, and news stories of events happening across the Council area.
