Local Outcome 5: Swimming Time Trials at the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs
As part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s commitment to provide facilities which enable residents to lead healthier and more active lifestyles, the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs is home to a 25-metre pool used by competitive swimmers in the area to train for national swimming competitions.
The Leisuredrome, one of three modern leisure centres in East Dunbartonshire, which boasts the training sized swimming pool as well as a teaching pool, sauna and steam room, flume, gym, sports hall, outdoor pitches, squash court and soft play.
Every year children and young people from across East Dunbartonshire meet at the Leisuredrome to compete in the Scottish Schools’ Swimming Championships Time Trials, in the hope of qualifying for the national competition held in one of Scotland’s long course swimming pools. The time trials are organised by EDLC Swimming Development Team in partnership with Active Schools and local swimming clubs. In November 2023, 100 competitors took part, with 22 qualifying for the national competition that took place at Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride in January 2024.
Karin Jackson, EDLC General Manager, said, “There is a large number of dedicated competitive young swimmers in East Dunbartonshire who train with local swimming clubs in the 25-metre pools in each of our leisure centres. EDLC’s Swimming Development Team also run Learn to Swim sessions in our pools, in line with the national framework from Scottish Swimming.
“We also have a large number of recreational swimmers in East Dunbartonshire, who attend our leisure centres regularly.
