East Dunbartonshire Council – Taxi Fare Review

The Council is undertaking a review – under section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 – of the maximum fares and other charges which can be made in connection with the hire of a taxi in its area.

The first stage of the review has been completed and proposed new scales were approved by the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee on 21 November 2024

The Council is proposing a 3% rise to maximum fares for all scales (rounded to the nearest five pence), excepting the extra charge for hires commencing/ending in the Glasgow Airport Drop-Off/Pick-Up zone, which will increase to £5.50.

The proposed new scales are set out in full below.

Public consultation is taking place between Monday 24 February and Friday 4 April 2025.

The Council will consider all representations received by Friday 4 April 2025, before reaching a final decision on the new scales.

These will come into effect on a date to be determined by the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee when it next meets to consider the response to the public consultation.

TARIFF (1) – applicable between the hours of 6am and 11pm

• MINIMUM FARE for a distance not exceeding 572 yards or for time not exceeding 2 minutes 30 seconds (or a combination of parts of such distance and such time): £3.40 (increased from £3.30)
• For each additional distance of 174 yards: £0.20 (no change)
• Fares for waiting, for each completed period of 39 seconds: £0.20 (no change).

Note: The above rates cover engagement of a taxi at any point within East Dunbartonshire. Waiting begins from the time of arrival of a taxi at the place of engagement. Engagement of a taxi at a point outwith East Dunbartonshire shall be the subject of special agreement.

Fares by time: Fares by time must be the subject of special agreement with the hirer.

TARIFF (2) – applicable between the hours of 11pm and 6am

• MINIMUM FARE for a distance not exceeding 572 yards or for time not exceeding 2 minutes 30 seconds (or a combination of parts of such distance and such time): £5.65 (increased from £5.50)
• For each additional distance of 174 yards: £0.20 (no change)
• Fares for waiting, for each completed period of 39 seconds: £0.20 (no change).

TARIFF (3) – applicable between the hours of 6pm and midnight on 24 December and 31 December, and the hours of 6am and midnight on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 2 January.

• MINIMUM FARE for a distance not exceeding 572 yards or for time not exceeding 2 minutes 30 seconds (or a combination of parts of such distance and such time): £5.65 (increased from £5.50)
• For each additional distance of 174 yards: £0.35 (no change)
• Fares for waiting, for each completed period of 39 seconds: £0.35 (no change).

TARIFF (4) – applicable between the hours of midnight and 6am on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 2 January

• MINIMUM FARE for a distance not exceeding 572 yards or for time not exceeding 2 minutes 30 seconds (or a combination of parts of such distance and such time): £9.15 (increased from £8.90)
• For each additional distance of 174 yards: £0.35 (no change)
• Fares for waiting, for each completed period of 39 seconds: £0.35 (no change).

EXTRA CHARGES:

• A charge of £2.25 (increased from £2.20) shall be payable when a taxi is pre-booked but not used
• Luggage not exceeding 56lbs in weight shall be carried free
• A charge of 20p (no change) shall be payable for luggage exceeding 56lbs in weight
• Hire commencing or ending at Glasgow Airport Drop Off/Pick Up zone - £5.50 (increased from £4)
• Soiling Charge: £51.50 (increased from £50).
