Section

  1. This is the third in a series of Technical Notes to update Members on the ongoing planning and arrangements for the upcoming UK Parliamentary election.

  2. Members will be aware that the Prime Minister has intimated his intention to dissolve Parliament in advance of a General Election on 4th July 2024.

  3. The timelines for the Election are very tight and so it is intended to issue advance publication of deadlines where this is possible.  Officers are preparing a press release for issue later today which will detail arrangements for the publication of the Notice of Election and nomination of candidates.

  4. As previously advised, dissolution of Parliament is scheduled to take place tomorrow.  This triggers the dispatch of the Writ, which requires the Returning Officer to run an election in the constituency.

  5. It is expected that the Writ will be received on Friday 31st May.  This allows the Notice of Election to be published and so this will take place on Friday afternoon.

  6. The Notice of Election sets out the arrangements for submitting nominations, the date of the poll, arrangements for payment of the Deposit, and the deadline for submission of applications for absent votes (including emergency proxy votes).

  7. Within the Mid Dunbartonshire County Constituency, nomination packs will be available from election@eastdunbarton.gov.uk.  Packs will be issued electronically and include details of the various supporting documents and information to be submitted.  Completed nomination papers must be submitted in hard copy and include “wet” signatures.

  8. Officers have made arrangements for nominations to be received from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th June between 10am and 4pm.  This will take place at the Council Headquarters and will be by appointment only.  Contact details and arrangements for making an appointment will be included within the packs.

  9. Members will be aware that candidates require to make payment of a £500 deposit prior to submission of nominations.  These payments must be made online, via the payments page.

  10. If any Member has any questions regarding the election, please contact Karen Donnelly in the first instance.
