Section

1. The purpose of this Technical Note is to provide Elected Members with further updates on the Canniesburn Toll Improvement Project (‘the Project’).  This follows recent updates in Technical Notes No. 108-24 of 25th June, 096-24 of 7th June and 075-24 of 3rd May 2024.

2. The previous Technical Note provided on 25th June 2024 (No. 108-24) advised that the section of MacFarlane Road, between its junctions with Canniesburn Toll Roundabout and the A81 Milngavie Road require to be closed from 29th July 2024 to 31st August 2024. It was also advised full road closures would be required at the roundabout as part of the resurfacing at the end of the programme.

3. Full closures of sections of the roundabout are required to undertake the resurfacing works. The carriageway must be regulated to make up the new road profile correctly and safely. The widths of the carriageway within the roundabout does not allow for safe working zones to allow operatives and plant to carry these works out under a lane closure traffic management. The resurfacing is the final phase of the project, following which it moves to practical completion.

4. Officers are now able to confirm details of the Traffic Management (TM), which include diversions required to enable the resurfacing phase and completion of the project. Three phases of TM will be applied between 1st September 2024 and 23rd September 2024.

5. Phase 1 (image below) includes the closure of the southbound carriageway of Drymen Road and the southeast carriageway of Maryhill Road and will be in place between 1st September 2024 and 8th September 2024. As part of this phase, MacFarlane Road (which is presently closed) will remain closed until 8th September 2024. The closure signs shown marked on the plan on Switchback northbound relate to MacFarlane Road closure, with Drymen Road remaining open northbound in Phase 1.  Please note that the image provided contains only some of the TM signage that will be present on the wider road network.

6. Phase 2 (image below) includes the closure of the Northwestbound carriageway of Maryhill Road and Canniesburn Toll Roundabout closed between its junctions with Maryhill Road and the extended east kerb line of the A739 Switchback Road (Northbound). These closures will be in place between 9th September 2024 and 23rd September 2024. The Switchback south closure in Phase 2 is 9th to 11th September. Residents in the affected area, including the Garscube Estate will be letter dropped by the contractor to advise of the traffic management and closures.

7. Phase 3 (image below) includes the closure of the northbound carriageway of Drymen Road and the northbound carriageway of Switchback Road between 12th September 2024 and 23rd September 2024. Access to roundabout from Maryhill Road will remain closed (as per Phase 2) through Phase 3. Please note southbound carriageway of the A739 Switchback Road will reopen to traffic during Phase 3.

8. As part of Phase 3, and in addition to the traffic management diversions, a contraflow system will also be in operation on Switchback Road between Canniesburn Drive and Canniesburn Toll Roundabout from 12th September 2024 to 23rd September 2024. This will be operated by a temporary six-way traffic signals system.  The use of temporary traffic signals could result in delays to traffic in the area but will allow as many movements as possible through the roundabout.

9. As part of the above works, the road closures currently in place at Moore Drive and the unnamed service road adjacent to Drymen Road will remain in place until 23rd September 2024.

10. Alternative diversion routes will be in place and signposted for each phase of traffic management.  Resident access to closed roads during all phases will be maintained and affected residents on all these roads as well as Canniesburn Drive and properties within the western part of Garscube Estate will be letter dropped in advance of the closure.
