A chance meeting in Coia’s café in Kirkintilloch 63 years ago was how it all began for 17 year-old Helen and her 20 year-old beau, John.
A romance that started in 1962 has lasted through the ages and saw the sparkling couple celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with a party this weekend in St Machan’s Church Hall in Lennoxtown - the same church where they were married in 1965.

Provost Renwick popped along to offer her congratulations. She said, “I was delighted to be invited to the Kearney family celebration for such a special occasion. It was lovely to meet Helen and John and chat to them and their family. My best wishes to them for their Diamond Anniversary!”
Helen, who worked in Lennox Castle until it closed, and John who began his working life at the Star Foundry and retired as the janitor at St Agatha’s Primary, have three children. They have six grandchildren and an expanding brood of great grandkids.
When asked their secret to a long and happy marriage they agreed that compromise was the answer but we believe John’s hours on the bowling green and Helen’s busy social life with her girlfriends probably helps.
Many congratulations to Mr & Mrs Kearney!
