At this year’s Thomas Muir Symposium in Turnbull High School, the theme for discussion was ‘Slavery in the time of Thomas Muir’.

Provost Renwick welcomed guests to the event to explore the impact of slavery during Thomas Muir's time in a thought-provoking event filled with discussion and historical insights.

Speakers included academics and experts Professor Gerard Carruthers from the University of Glasgow, Dr Ian Whyte, David Kenvyn and Dr Stephen Mullen from the University of Glasgow with contributions from pupils, Council Leader Gordan Low and Education Convener Lynda Williamson.

Provost Renwick said, “This Symposium – now in its 12th year – has tackled some very big topics over the piece and continues to attract excellent speakers. It was a great event and I’d like to thank the Friends of Thomas Muir Group for once again organising this interesting and informative afternoon.

“The work that they do to ensure that the legacy of Thomas Muir continues and is carried forward into future generations is so important. We have such a rich local history that must be celebrated, recounted and discussed to ensure that it lives on.”
