Elvira & Joe’s Platinum Wedding Party

It was love at first sight in 1952 when Joe Togneri set eyes on Elvira, newly arrived in Scotland from her family home in Italy.

Despite the language barrier, love blossomed and the young couple were soon married in Maryhill Immaculate Conception Church.

They worked hard building up their own business in the fish and chips industry and brought up their three children: Donnie, Theresa and Lorraine.

Provost and Depute Lieutenant dropped in on the day

Fast forward seventy years and Mr & Mrs Togneri - proud grandparents to Anthony, Carla and Laura - joined with family and friends to celebrate their Platinum Wedding Anniversary with Provost Gillian Renwick and Deputy Lieutenant Anne Walker dropping in on the happy couple.

Provost Renwick said,

It was lovely to meet Elvira and Joe at their home and to hear tales of their long, married life together and their many travels to Italy and Spain.

Wonderful cook and gardener

Elvira is a wonderful cook while Joe prefers time in the garden and their secret to a successful union? A wee argument every day to clear the air.”
