Thomas Muir Symposium 2023
The annual Thomas Muir Symposium was held yesterday in Douglas Academy in Milngavie.
Provost Renwick had the honour of welcoming guests to the event to celebrate the life and times of Thomas Muir, the Father of Scottish democracy who had strong links with East Dunbartonshire.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of John Maclean's passing - a Scottish schoolteacher and socialist of the 'Red Clydeside' era - so it was fitting that he took his place alongside Thomas Muir at the heart of the event, which is itself at the heart of the Thomas Muir Festival.
Provost Renwick said,
Thanks to the Friends of Thomas Muir
"My thanks to the Friends of Thomas Muir who organised the event once again this year and to Douglas Academy who hosted.
"We were entertained by the compelling student speakers from Douglas Academy who spoke with passion about Thomas Muir and John Maclean, while the academics from Glasgow University were impressive in their knowledge and belief in their respective subject matter which was the music and literature as a means of rebellion, and the legal cases of both men who were charged with sedition."
