Armed Forces Day flag flies in East Dunbartonshire in support of troops

Once again East Dunbartonshire Council is showing its support for Armed Forces Day by flying the official Armed Forces flag outside its HQ in Kirkintilloch.

Armed Forces Day Saturday 24 June 2023) is an opportunity for the whole country to say thank you to our troops, those currently serving and those who have served in the past.

Council HQ flying the flag

On behalf of the people of East Dunbartonshire, Provost Gillian Renwick and Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Jill Young MBE raised the special flag alongside Robert Campbell MBE, a retired Royal Highland Fusilier living in East Dunbartonshire.

The Council HQ will be one of many buildings across the UK proudly flying the flag in a show of unity, gratitude and support for serving troops and their families, veterans and cadets.

Provost Gillian Renwick said,

It’s an honour and privilege to raise this very special flag again this year as a public act of support for Armed Forces Day.

Well established Council tradition

It is a well-established Council tradition now and it is important that we continue to be part of this commemoration and celebration. The commitment, service, bravery and sacrifice of personnel past and present must always be recognised and I am proud to lead the tributes in East Dunbartonshire.”

Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Jill Young MBE, added, “We, as a nation, continue to be indebted to those who today risk their lives in many places around the world and to the Veterans whose service we will never forget and always honour.

I believe that the United Kingdom has the finest Armed Forces in the world including our Reservists, Cadets and Volunteers all who represent the very best that this country stands for. This is the day when the rest of us can show our patriotic support for their outstanding contribution to this country.”

In 2017, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant with the Ministry of Defence - a promise that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families are treated fairly.
