Meet the winner of the Sport category at this year’s Provost Community Champion Awards!

The Sports Champion from this year’s Provost Community Champion Awards is Barbara Knox. Barbara is the junior convenor for Springburn Harriers giving up many hours of her time to ensure that children have access to high quality athletics sessions.

Under Barbara’s leadership the club has grown from 20 children in 2014 to a membership of over 300. Barbara organises races throughout the year in East Dunbartonshire including Winter XC events, Junior Jack, and the East Dunbartonshire Inter-Schools Track and Field Competition. She recruits parents, young leaders and other volunteers to assist with the races to ensure everyone is kept safe and are able to enjoy the run. As well as ensuring the physical health and wellbeing of junior members, Barbara also works closely with SAMH to ensure that she provides as much mental health support through club sessions as possible. Barbara supports over 20 young leaders from East Dunbartonshire schools in volunteering roles at the club and she helps them to develop coaching skills while gaining recognised qualifications and skills. As she was presented with her Award Barbara said, “I was not expecting this Award at all. We all love what we do and it’s very much a team effort.” Congratulations to our Sports Champion – Barbara Knox
